<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #444444; font-size: 13px;">Growing up, I always looked forward to watching a Hitchcock movie when it was on AMC. While the stories were the best part, Hitchcock's famous "cool blondes" were always fun, in a beautiful, slightly sinister way. Kim Novak, Grace Kelly, Eva Marie Saint. Some better actresses than others, but all perfectly in the theme.</span><br />

My hair stylist and I christened it "Priscilla." This is what I'd imagine Priscilla to look like, peaking her face out every now and then in some crazy homage to the 1960's (It was actually part of a Vogue photoshoot early this year, I'll have to find the link). I can't see her, but I know she's always there. </span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">What have I been doing, you may ask? Well, I've been watching a lot of 1970's movies lately, which I've found are generally either awesome or awesomely campy, and one of those was <i>The Turning Point</i> (1977), a terrifically catty movie that is also the original ballet film exploring obsessive rivalry. It even includes a scene in which The Anne Bancroft and The Shirley MacLaine end a fight spanking each other! Only in the 70's.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">The 1970's and 80's was a golden era of ballet indeed (this was also when Elton John wrote "Tiny Dancer," no connection), and Alessandra Ferri was one of its stars. Here she is in <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOAFsU2kWPw&feature=fvst" style="font-style: italic;">Giselle</a>, with a nice grain filter on Photoshop to make it look extra period. </span></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03871974022659030819noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7719602059107180721.post-27167884914303893232012-03-28T09:43:00.000-07:002012-03-28T09:43:05.513-07:00Sketchy Lad<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The lovely Ms. Spilker spoke of just how influential he was, and highlighted some of his other brave designs, like this <a href="http://www.google.com/imgres?q=1965+scandal&hl=en&biw=1317&bih=786&gbv=2&tbm=isch&tbnid=vH6b0VupNdFI1M:&imgrefurl=http://www.glamoursplash.com/2011_08_01_archive.html&docid=OLs-BwF1r3OpuM&imgurl=https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgymR5JwbAGl1u0Gi-K1rk6IQCHVr6QyleM0O0N8WP_FZ5B5VPB3HloM9uOtvZLyHX5aOrVoNddK568GGFlaaaxlgMgpJfHB4sZx02nbWrWvGlnf7O4TyRRRQYK1OBUMfS7lcxdJtIvAV8/s400/1965scandal.jpg&w=304&h=400&ei=fPpgT8u1AcLE2gWmzYygCA&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=184&vpy=132&dur=359&hovh=192&hovw=144&tx=134&ty=149&sig=103259642619479345552&page=1&tbnh=147&tbnw=108&start=0&ndsp=30&ved=1t:429,r:0,s:0">one</a> from 1965.</span></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03871974022659030819noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7719602059107180721.post-90258504122347079822012-03-13T16:22:00.001-07:002012-03-14T13:13:36.827-07:00Wonder Bread<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">The introduction to LACMA's exhibit begins with a quote by Wallace Stegner: "California's American, only more so." I think <a href="http://www.google.com/imgres?q=margit+fellegi+cole&um=1&hl=en&sa=N&biw=1317&bih=786&tbm=isch&tbnid=oI0GusHgdgQQ0M:&imgrefurl=http://slowmuse.wordpress.com/tag/california-design/&docid=qIP0ieuUcBLGjM&imgurl=http://slowmuse.files.wordpress.com/2011/12/29_gtc_pst_lacma0016.jpeg%253Fw%253D490&w=345&h=454&ei=kNZfT9DyOIvZiALbi6GQDQ&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=647&vpy=121&dur=263&hovh=258&hovw=196&tx=156&ty=132&sig=103259642619479345552&page=1&tbnh=142&tbnw=105&start=0&ndsp=36&ved=1t:429,r:4,s:0">Margit Fellegi's</a> little beach set for Cole featured in the exhibit reflects this perfectly. Designed for warmweather, with primary polka dots that suggest both innocence and streamlined modernity, the outfit is a celebration of a post-war lifestyle. Plus, it was mass produced for the lady sick of sewing.</span></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03871974022659030819noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7719602059107180721.post-69406141288646992452012-03-12T11:55:00.000-07:002012-03-14T13:13:52.020-07:00Mid-Century Madness<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">Sometimes when I'm designing, I have so many inspirational images that I adore, but are so incongruous that I don't know what to do with them. So I end up drawing a pleated, tucked, ruched, satin, plaid, velvet number that looks like one of those hybrid animals I used to make back in the day: <a href="http://www.inhabitots.com/twisty-critters-blocks-let-kids-create-fun-wacky-animals/">Twisty Critters</a>.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">I find that when this is the case, the best thing to do is to take a break, come back and then sketch again without looking at my research. This is what I did for my 1950's dame, successfully inspired by <a href="http://www.flickriver.com/photos/chicagohistory/popular-interesting/">Charles James</a>, <a href="https://www.salonofthedames.com/buy/product/incredible-vintage-1950s-hollywood-showgirl-sequin-gown-by-frank-starr">Frank Starr</a>, and <a href="http://theniftyfifties.tumblr.com/post/16388444220/photography-phone-music-books-fashion-clothes-shopping-r">Balenciaga</a>.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyiw7BBYc71CCWsF3TNxyt_trbxaXin4zNINSIKbvdjb0DLzvBRIZq2wm7Dm0-YFZF_DzBfghzCj7l-8K9PcFhrnlqUy23UobpLlQvv2oPF4W0G9AXI8uymymI2aSsWSAZydt9wK58QP8/s1600/heads3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyiw7BBYc71CCWsF3TNxyt_trbxaXin4zNINSIKbvdjb0DLzvBRIZq2wm7Dm0-YFZF_DzBfghzCj7l-8K9PcFhrnlqUy23UobpLlQvv2oPF4W0G9AXI8uymymI2aSsWSAZydt9wK58QP8/s1600/heads3.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">The trick with rendering skin with marker is to not be afraid to lay it on in there. I usually use my lightest color first to cover a larger area, and then go back in with darker shades to slowly build it up. With darker skin tones, your lightest color will already be darker than a paler skin, so you just have to not be afraid to go for it.</span></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">Now, if my hair could look like the bouffant all of the time, I'd be a happy gal. Of course, I can't say the same about the lips, I think she's had some work done... </span></div>
